Von der Leyen urges G7 to unite against China's trade tactics

Von der Leyen urges G7 to unite against China's trade tactics

EU/EN - The EU, with its Trade diversion monitor, has highlighted the worsening distortions in trade relations with China. Data shows an increase in monthly exports from China to Germany and France of more than 20% in both April and May 2025. Other data still indicate that imports of LEDs have increased by 156%, presumably from China, while their price has fallen by 65%. Imports of industrial robots have increased by 315%, with a 35% drop in price. These exaggerations have not gone unnoticed at the Berlaymont and President Von der Leyen has become the spokesperson of the discontent that is spreading in the EU chancelleries with Beijing on the front of trade imbalances. Thus, during the G7 meeting in mid-June, the President of the EU Commission, highlighted how China is flooding global markets with subsidized overcapacity that its domestic market is not able to absorb. For the Brussels executive, the Asian superpower has become the main problem of the G7. With a retrospective narrative to support her statements, Von der Leyen said in Canada: "We firmly believe that the biggest challenges are not trade between the G7 partners," and, bluntly, she significantly remarked: "Rather, the sources of the biggest collective problem we have originate from China's accession to the WTO in 2001." China is blamed for clinging to its status as a developing country at the WTO and for being unwilling to live within the limits of the rules-based international system. Von der Leyen also accused Beijing of weakening intellectual property protections and paying out huge subsidies to dominate global supply chains.
