EU/ENG - European Commission President von der Leyen received a letter from US President Donald Trump announcing the introduction of 30% tariffs on goods arriving from the European Union starting August 1st. Reactions in Brussels were immediate.
"We remain ready to continue working to reach an agreement by August 1st. At the same time, we will take all necessary measures to safeguard EU interests, including the adoption of proportionate countermeasures if necessary." This was stated by EU Commission President von der Leyen, who was echoed by European Council President Costa: "The EU remains firm, united, and ready to protect our interests, fully supporting the efforts of President von der Leyen and the Commission to reach a fair agreement with the United States."
Reactions from the capitals were mixed.
Berlin and Rome were cautious. German Economics Minister Reiche stated that it is necessary to "pragmatically negotiate a solution with the United States that focuses on the main points of conflict."
Talks from Paris and Madrid highlight the Commission's reactive response to Trump.
Macron argued that it would be better to accelerate "the preparation of credible countermeasures, mobilizing all available tools, including the coercion mechanism, if an agreement is not reached by August 1st."
If Brussels does take countermeasures, Trump even wrote that further retaliation is possible, further straining transatlantic trade relations.

"Restiamo pronti a continuare a lavorare per raggiungere un accordo entro il primo agosto. Allo stesso tempo, adotteremo tutte le misure necessarie per salvaguardare gli interessi dell'Ue, inclusa l'adozione di contromisure proporzionate, se necessario". Lo dichiara la presidente della Commissione Ue Von der Leyen alla quale si allinea il Presidente del Consiglio europeo Costa: “L'Ue resta ferma, unita e pronta a proteggere i nostri interessi, sostenendo pienamente gli sforzi della presidente von der Leyen e della Commissione per raggiungere un accordo equo con gli Stati Uniti”
Dalle capitali giungono reazioni con toni diversi.
Caute Berlino e Roma. La ministra dell’economia tedesca Reiche ha dichiarato che bisogna “negoziare pragmaticamente una soluzione con gli Stati Uniti che si concentri sui principali punti di conflitto”.
Da Parigi e Madrid si parla evidenzia la replica reattiva a Trump della Commissione.
Per Macron meglio accellerare "la preparazione di contromisure credibili, mobilitando tutti gli strumenti a disposizione, compreso il meccanismo anticoercizione, qualora non si raggiunga un accordo entro il 1° agosto”.
Nel caso ci siano contromisure di Bruxelles, Trump ha addirittura scritto che sono possibili ulteriori ritorsioni in un crescendo di lacerazione delle relazioni commerciali transatlantiche.
