EU/ENG- The Trump administration has postponed until August 7 the implementation of the 15% tariffs that will be applied to approximately 70% of European goods exported to the United States. European Trade Commissioner Sefkovic explained in a blog post that sherpas continue to negotiate more favorable terms or exemptions for the remaining 30% of goods. Work is underway to develop a joint statement clarifying the significant details missing from the document signed in Scotland by Trump and von der Leyen.
The French government immediately criticized the agreement, followed days later by a less than favorable statement from the Merz government in Berlin. Italy, whose government has never directly attacked the Trump administration, remains cautious.
The debate over the US tariffs is heated, both regarding the impact they will have on the economies of European Union countries and over von der Leyen's position, which is considered too lenient toward the White House.
The general impression is that we have entered a prolonged phase of trade war and that the agreement is only the first stage of the tribulations yet to come, which call for a more cohesive political Europe and urgent convergence on fiscal union, capable of giving standing to those negotiating for the European Union around the world.

Il commissario europeo al commercio Sefkovic in un post ha spiegato che gli sherpa continuano a trattare per strappare condizioni più favorevoli o esenzioni per il restante 30% delle merci. Si lavora per una dichiarazione congiunta che chiarisca i dettagli, non di poco conto, mancanti nel documento firmato in Scozia da Trump e Von der Leyen.
Il governo francese ha subito criticato l'accordo, seguito dopo giorni dalla dichiarazione non proprio favorevole del governo Merz a Berlino. Resta prudente l'Italia il cui governo non ha mai frontalmente attaccato l'amministrazione Trump.
Il dibattito sui dazi applicati dagli Usa è acceso sia sull'impatto che graverà sulle economie dei Paesi dell'Unione europea e sia sulla postura della Von der Leyen ritenuta troppo morbida con la Casa Bianca.
L'impressione generale è che si sia entrati in una prolungata fase di guerra commerciale e che l'accordo sia solo una prima tappa delle traversie ancora da subire e che reclamano una Europa politica più coesa e convergenze non procrastinabili sull'Unione fiscale in grado di dare standing a chi negozia nel mondo per l'Unione europea.
