The Prime Minister has chosen not to simply endure political instability, but to accelerate it in the hope of escaping it - Fiducia l'8 settembre per Bayrou?

EU/ENG - On Monday, August 25, French Prime Minister François Bayrou announced that his government would seek a vote of confidence from the National Assembly on September 8. Bayrou chose not to simply endure political instability, but to accelerate it in the hope of escaping it. The prime minister wants to test in Parliament the real possibility of continuing to govern France, even at the risk of a likely vote of no confidence in the new austerity plan, which, according to Economy Minister Lombard, is necessary to balance the public finances. According to the government, €44 billion is needed immediately to reduce the public deficit, followed by already announced reforms.
French public debt has reached nearly 114% of GDP. After Greece and Italy, it is the third largest in the eurozone. As for the deficit, it has reached 5.8% of gross domestic product, almost double the EU's official limit of 3%, and the European Commission has already predicted that the French deficit will be the highest in the eurozone in 2025 and 2026.
The opposition's reactions were immediate. Mélenchon of France Insoumise even called for Macron's resignation if the third government of the legislature collapses. Les Ecolgistes will not vote for confidence, nor will the far-right opposition Rassemblement National. The support of the 66 Socialist Party MPs, who could give the government some hope of survival, is still uncertain.
