Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia: the governing parties have stemmed the expected rise of the far right

EU/ENG - North Rhine-Westphalia is Germany's most populous state, with over 18 million inhabitants. For these reasons, the municipal elections held on September 14th have taken on national significance and are capable of indicating electoral trends for the near future of Germany as a whole. The governing parties have stemmed the expected rise of the far right, which was considered unlikely even a few months ago in a western German state. The Christian Democrats of the CDU (Christian Democratic Union Deutschlands) remain the leading party with 33.26% and 1,205 seats, while the Social Democrats of the SPD (Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands) are second with 22.10% (827 seats). Behind the parties of the governing grand coalition, the right and green parties competed for third place. The AfD (Alternative für Deutschland) rose to 14.48% and reached 552 seats, followed closely by the Greens (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) who dropped to 13.50% (466 seats).
