War in Ukraine: EU pushes for peace plan to be reduced to 19 points

EU/ENG - From Geneva to Abu Dhabi and across European capitals, the quest to end Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine continues, while the country continues to be severely targeted by Russian drones and military forces. Trump's 28-point plan has been reduced to 19, thanks to European diplomatic pressure. This time, the European Union is seeking to influence a peace negotiation that concerns it very closely. The President of the European Commission made this clear on Wednesday, November 26, while discussing the ongoing negotiations at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Von der Leyen also hinted at the possibility of using frozen Russian assets to finance Ukraine: "I don't see a scenario in which European taxpayers will foot the bill alone."

In her speech, the President Von der Leyen highlighted the need for a credible peace plan for Ukraine that prioritizes stopping the war, preserving borders, enhancing national security, and integrating Ukraine into the European Union. She emphasized that Ukraine must be free to choose its European destiny, supported by reconstruction and economic integration, while collaborating with international partners towards lasting peace. Additionally, she put a strong focus on the return of abducted Ukrainian children, with plans to co-host a summit to urge global action for their reunion with their families.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas echoed her sentiments: "Everyone welcomes the US push for peace. We all want this war to end, but how it ends is also important," she said on the sidelines of a remote meeting with the foreign ministers of the 27 member states, following the impromptu summit of EU heads of state and government during the EU-African Union meeting in Angola on November 24-25.
