Europe reacts to US and Israeli attack on Iran

EU/ENG - The joint attack on Iran on Saturday, February 28, by the United States and Israel, ushered in a new phase of tension in the Middle East. A varied but convergent reaction has erupted in Europe: deep concern, calls for de-escalation, invocation of international law, and utmost attention to the safety of citizens in the area.
Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei and his defense minister were killed by a ballistic missile at the site where they were staying. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the developments "deeply worrying", reaffirming her commitment to safeguarding regional stability and calling on "all parties" to exercise maximum restraint.

Von der Leyen referred to the sanctions already adopted by the European Union against the Islamic Iranian regime. The President emphasized the importance of ensuring nuclear safety and avoiding actions that could undermine the global non-proliferation regime. Brussels' diplomatic efforts with its Arab partners continue, despite this complex situation, focusing on the protection of civilians and respect for international law. Non-essential personnel are being withdrawn from the region.

Brussels is withdrawing non-essential personnel from the region, and the consular network is working to facilitate the departure of EU citizens. The European naval mission Aspides in the Red Sea remains on maximum alert.

France, Germany, and the United Kingdom have stated their readiness to take defensive action against Iran in response to Iranian attacks on targets in the region (Below is a map of the Middle East region and Targets in Iran).

pronte a intraprendere azioni difensive contro l'Iran in risposta agli

attacchi iraniani contro obiettivi nella regione.
