I venti anni dell'Euro

In circolazione dl primo gennaio 2002, è oggi la moneta di 19 Paesi europei e 340 milioni di abitanti

L'Euro, la moneta comune europea, raggiunge dal primo gennaio 2022 il traguardo dei suoi venti anni di circolazione. Una moneta nata dal gran compromesso franco-tedesco maturato dopo l'unificazione tedesca al Consiglio europeo di Maastricht nel dicembre 1991, con le disposizioni dell'omonimo Trattato e frutto, in base alla celebre relazione dell'allora presidente della Commissione Delors, di un un periodo preparatorio suddiviso in tre fasi, compreso tra il 1990 e il 1999, per giungere a un’Unione economica e monetaria e all’area dell’euro.

Dopo un decennio di preparativi l'euro venne introdotto il 1° gennaio 1999: durante i primi tre anni fu "invisibile", in quanto utilizzato solo a fini contabili e per i pagamenti elettronici. Le monete e le banconote entrarono in circolazione il 1° gennaio 2002 e in 12 paesi dell'UE si assistette al passaggio alla nuova valuta.

Il percorso per tenere nei parametri di Maastricht fondamentali economici, da diverse parti giudicati troppo asimmetrici, è avvenuto in un contesto generale di ricerca della stabilità macroeconomica possibile e cercando di non minare la reputation della moneta comune che è sembrata vacillare solo nel biennio di grave crisi dei debiti sovrani tra il 2008 e il 2010.

L'euro circola in 19 Paesi con 340 milioni di abitanti e si è comunque affermata in due decenni come seconda divisa del mondo, dietro solo al dollaro americano.
