Romanian court annuls result of presidential election

A causa di interferenze russe, denunciate dai servizi di sicurezza.

EN - On Friday, December 6, two days before the run-off, Romania's Constitutional Court annulled the presidential elections that had reached a run-off between Elena Lasconi, a pro-EU conservative journalist, and the pro-Russian Călin Georgescu, who emerged by surprise, with a strong impact on social media, especially TikTok. The decision came after two weeks in which doubts were repeatedly raised about the outcome of the first round. It was the security services who had feared certain Russian interference. First, the Communications Regulatory Authority (ANCOM) threatened to suspend TikTok until it asked the European Commission to launch a formal investigation into the Chinese-owned platform. Then the Supreme Court ordered a recount of the votes, which confirmed the victory of Georgescu and Lasconi. Finally, the Romanian Court annulled the vote of Sunday, December 8. The government will now have to find a date for new elections.
