Austria finally has a government. Stocker is the new chancellor

Estrema destra all'opposizione

EU/EN - Austria finally has a government, after the longest negotiations in its modern history. It took five months for the ÖVP People's Party, with the SPÖ Social Democrats and the Neos Liberals to form a three-party executive, forming a coalition that excludes the far-right FPÖ, which came first in last September's elections with almost 29 percent of the vote. It was a historic first since the Second World War, the primacy at the polls of a party, FPÖ, founded decades ago by former members of the SS from the ashes of Nazism.

The program of the government led by the popular Stocker includes measures to reduce Vienna's budget deficit and bring it back within the 3 percent limit requested by Brussels. Savings are expected from the reform of the pension system. Taxes on banks and on the extra profits of fossil fuel producers are increasing. On migration flows, there is talk of a tightening of family reunification policies for refugees.

Stocker is the new chancellor

Christian Stocker was, from September 2022 to January 2025, secretary general of the People's Party, becoming, on 5 January 2025, its new interim leader, following the resignation of Chancellor Karl Nehammer. A decisive politician in the coalition talks between ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS, Stocker saw them fail for the first time following the 2024 Austrian parliamentary elections and then attempted, after having previously excluded him, to start coalition talks with Herbert Kickl, leader of FPÖ. After negotiations with the far right also failed, Stocker managed to announce on 27 February 2025 that he had brought together SPÖ, ÖVP and NEOS and to run to lead the new coalition government in Vienna that excludes the far right.
