Marco Buti at the European Dialogues in Florence

EU/ENG - On the evening of Friday, May 31, the European Dialogues series—a flagship initiative by the cross-media platform Europolitiche—convened for a timely examination of the future of the European project. The discussion was anchored in the central thesis of the recently published volume, "Europa. Evitare il declino" (Europe: Avoiding Decline), co-authored by professors Marco Buti and Marcello Messori and released this past May by Il Sole 24 Ore.

The event was held at the elegant Residenza Itaca in Florence, a hub of intellectual vitality founded by the writer and polymath Paolo Ciampi. Long a supporter of the cultural initiatives spearheaded by I Libri di Mompracem, Mr. Ciampi’s residence provided the perfect setting for an evening of rigorous, high-level analysis.

The guest of honour was Professor Marco Buti, holder of the Tommaso Padoa Schioppa Chair at the European University Institute. A veteran of the Brussels establishment, Professor Buti brings a wealth of experience from his tenure as Director-General of Economic and Financial Affairs at the European Commission, as well as his roles as a delegate to G7 and G20 finance committees.

Following an introduction by Erasmus Ambassador Giusy Rossi, Professor Buti engaged in a trenchant dialogue with Antonio De Chiara, director of Europolitiche. The conversation dissected the structural fragilities currently hindering the EU, exploring the policy avenues necessary to stave off economic and political marginalisation. The scope of the debate widened as distinguished attendees joined the fray, fostering a rich, interdisciplinary exchange.

The dialogue was further enriched by the contributions of a formidable panel, including Marco Ricceri (Secretary-General of Eurispes), Marco Mayer (Professor at Luiss University), Gregor Fitzi (a prominent sociologist from the University of Bielefeld), Francesca De Chiara (CNR Bologna), Luigi Mancini (Professor at the Second University of Rome), and the author Chiara Bini.

The event underscored Florence’s enduring role as a vital crossroads for European thought. At a time of unprecedented geopolitical instability, the evening served as a poignant reminder that rigorous debate among experts and civil society remains the essential prerequisite for recalibrating the European course—a project now forced to rediscover its strategic unity and resolve.
