Germany: Scholz will still lead the SPD in the next general elections in February

EN - German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who has been at the helm of the government since December 2021 and will head a minority executive with only the Greens from 7 November 2024, is set to be the SPD candidate in the next political elections in Germany scheduled for 23 February 2025. The process for Scholz's reconfirmation has been mapped out. The SPD executives will meet on Monday 25 November to seal the agreement on the candidate for chancellor while Scholz is expected to present his electoral programme in Berlin on Saturday 30 November. However, the official announcement will only come from the federal congress on 11 January.

In a video released on November 21, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, a very popular figure, declared himself unavailable to present himself as the new leader, possibly to oppose the favorite Friedrich Merz, head of the Christian Democratic Union of the CDU-CSU given by the polls at 30 percent of the consensus against 16-18 percent of the Social Democrats. The picture of the major parties is completed with an increase in consensus for the far-right AFD at the same level or slightly above that of the SPD, which suggests that a Gross Koalition, to stem the far right, between the Social Democrats and Christian Democrats in the next legislature is not excluded.

Further behind are the Greens, given at 12 percent with the current Minister of Economy Habeck as candidate, followed at a safe distance by the formation led by Sahra Wagenknecht, founder and leader of the BSW, the party of the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance, born from the split on the left with Die Linke. In free fall and in doubt as to whether it will be able to overcome the 5 percent threshold, the FDP, the liberals of the former Minister of Finance Lindner who is attributed to the early end of the traffic light coalition, so defined by the three distinctive colors of the political forces that had formed it by electing Scholz as chancellor on December 8, 2021. The left-wing party Die Linke also risks not making it to the polls, relying on the trio of elderly leaders Gysi, Bartsch and Ramelow.
