Robert Prevost elected as first American pope and takes the name Leo XIV

EU/EN - The new Pope was elected on the fourth ballot. It is the first time that a North American Pontiff has been elected. Prevost, who will turn 70 on September 14, will be called Leo XIV. He is originally from Chicago and since January 30, 2023, he has been Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.

A graduate and doctorate holder, Prevost led the Augustinians for two consecutive terms as Prior General of the Order of Saint Augustine, from 2001 to 2013, and had a long missionary experience in Peru, where he was also bishop of Chiclayo.

In his first farewell speech, Leo XIV indicated a teaching inspired by peace, a sense of mission, and bridges. More reserved than his predecessor, it is difficult to imagine him dealing with an antagonistic media. It will be the choices of this Pontiff of the men governing the Church that will reveal in the coming months the geopolitical impact of this new papal course and his ability to influence the institution with new reforms.
