2025 German elections: What to expect

Bundestagswahl: Deutschland stimmt ab.Si vota domenica. Sondaggi: cristiano-democratici certamente primi. L'AfD seconda, terza la Spd e quarti i Verdi.

EU/DE - EU/DE - Deutschland wählt heute.

EU/EN - A federal election will be held in Germany on 23 February 2025 to elect the 630 members of the 21st Bundestag.

The election had been prospectively scheduled for 28 September 2025, but was brought forward due to the collapse of the governing coalition during the 2024 German government crisis. Voting will take place on Sunday and polls indicate that the Christian Democrats will certainly be first. The AfD is expected to be the second party, the SPD third and the Greens fourth.

There has been debate for months about which coalition to govern, with negotiations that could last a long time, revolving around the ability of the Christian Democrats and their leader Merz to form a credible one. In any case, no party has declared itself available for a coalition with the AfD, although it has obtained resounding endorsements from US Vice President Vance and tycoon Musk. A CDU/CSU-Green coalition or a return to the "grand coalition" with the SPD are probable options or there is even talk of a "Deutschland-Koalition" formed by the CDU, SPD and FDP (black, red and yellow) in case the liberals manage to enter the Bundestag.

I partiti
