Elections in Germany: CDU wins with Merz, will govern with SPD, despite a consensus crisis. AFD advances

EN - The outcome of the elections in Germany was of great importance for the entire European Union and had been awaited for months. The verdict at the polls substantially met the eve forecasts, differing only slightly from the polls released in the week preceding the election Sunday of February 23.

Following the affirmation as the first, second and third parties respectively of the CDU-CSU (208 seats), the AFD (152 seats) and the SPD (120 seats), the coalition that is running to govern permanently in Berlin is between the Christian Democrats and the Social Democrats with a balance of power that assigns the federal chancellery to the leader of the first party Friedrich Merz, a moderate centrist, born in 1955, who re-emerged on the scene after the withdrawal of Merkel, his internal opponent. And the advancement of the far right has also been confirmed with a dowry of parliamentarians who will have to oppose by forming a group in the Bundestag previously declared not to be associated with the political forces that traditionally alternate in government in post-war Germany. The Greens' holding, fourth party with 85 elected deputies, and the good success of the left-wing formation Linke, fifth parliamentary force with 64 seats, strengthen the cordon sanitaire of democratic guarantee that is deployed in the hemicycle to embank Alternative for Deutschland, which has reached a fifth of the 630 seats up for grabs. The liberals of FDP and the personal party of Sara Wagenknech, who had nine ex-Linke deputies in the previous legislature, fail to enter the Bundestag.
