EU/EN - The Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund were held from 25 to 27 April. In Washington, the speeches of the President of the ECB Lagarde and the EU Commissioner for Economy Dombrovskis were aimed at reassuring the resilience of the Eurosystem and the European Union as a whole, with respect to any scenarios of macroeconomic instability that might emerge in the coming months or weeks.
Lagarde spoke broadly, focusing on inflation, forecast by the ECB, in the eurozone around the two percent target. Disturbances in global trade should be avoided, according to the President who once again hoped for growth in international cooperation and not sudden setbacks.
Dombrovskis reported calm and constructive discussions with the Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, harbingers of possible agreements on tariffs. The EU, as is known, has already put forward concrete proposals such as eliminating tariffs on industrial goods and is waiting for a response from the United States. "We are ready for dialogue," said the European Commissioner and significantly added: "We will not give up our most important partnership. In an increasingly conflictual world, we will need each other even more," leaving the door open to the US administration for future developments in negotiations on transatlantic trade.

A Washington gli speech della Presidente dalla Bce Lagarde e del Commissario Ue all'Economia Dombrovskis sono stati improntati a rassicurare sulla resilienza dell'Eurosistema e dell'Unione europea nel suo complesso, rispetto a eventuali scenari di instabilità macroeconomica, che dovessero profilarsi nei prossimi mesi o settimane.
Lagarde ha parlato ad ampio raggio, soffermandosi sull'inflazione, prevista dalla Bce, nell'eurozona intorno all'obiettivo del due per cento. Sarebbero da evitare le perturbazioni nel commercio globale, secondo la presidente che ha auspicato, ancora una volta, la crescita della cooperazione internazionale e non brusche battute d'arresto.
Dombrovskis ha riferito di colloqui sereni e costruttivi con il Segretario al Tesoro Scott Bessent, forieri di possibili intese sui dazi. L’Ue, come noto, ha già avanzato proposte concrete come l’azzeramento dei dazi sui beni industriali ed è in attesa di una risposta dagli Stati Uniti. “Siamo pronti al dialogo" ha dichiarato il Commissario europeo e ha significativamente aggiunto: “Non rinunciamo alla nostra partnership più importante. In un mondo sempre più conflittuale, avremo ancora più bisogno l’uno dell’altro”, lasciando la porta aperta all'amministrazione statunitense per i prossimi sviluppi negoziali su condizioni e rapporti commerciali transatlantici.
