EU/EN - An “informal meeting”scheduled for 3 February at the Château de Limont, close to Brussels, dedicated to the topic of European defence. This is what the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, is proposing to the 27 EU Heads of State or Government, in a letter sent to them on January 13, 2025.
“The purpose of this meeting is to prepare the ground for the decisions we will have to take and to provide guidance to the Commission and the High Representative as they prepare a white paper on the future of European defence, which will cover joint defence initiatives and the resources necessary to develop them. As foreseen in the Leaders’ Agenda, my aim is to return to the subject of defence at the June 2025 European Council”, President Costa wrote.
“I believe we share a similar assessment of the threats Europe is facing. Russia’s aggression against Ukraine has brought high-intensity war back to our continent – violating the core principles of international law and threatening European security – coupled with growing hybrid and cyber-attacks on Member States and their economies and societies. Peace in Europe depends on Ukraine winning a comprehensive, just and lasting peace. This geopolitical context, which is also marked by the situation in the Middle East, will remain challenging in the foreseeable future”.
Costa also invited Rutte from NATO and British Prime Minister Starmer, demonstrating the importance he attributes to the presence of all the players involved in the sector.
IT - Un “incontro informale” previsto per il 3 febbraio al Château de Limont, vicino a Bruxelles, dedicato al tema della difesa europea. È quanto propone Antonio Costa, presidente del Consiglio europeo, con una lettera spedita il 13 gennaio ai 27 capi di Stato e di governo dell’Ue.
“Lo scopo di questa riunione è preparare il terreno per le decisioni che dovremo prendere e fornire indicazioni alla Commissione e all’Alto rappresentante nella preparazione di un ‘libro bianco’ sul futuro della difesa europea, che riguarderà le iniziative di difesa congiunte e le risorse necessarie per svilupparle. Come previsto nell’Agenda dei leader, il mio obiettivo è tornare sull’argomento della difesa al Consiglio europeo di giugno 2025” ha scritto il Presidente.
“Credo che condividiamo una valutazione simile delle minacce che l’Europa sta affrontando. L’aggressione della Russia contro l’Ucraina ha riportato una guerra ad alta intensità nel nostro continente, violando i principi fondamentali del diritto internazionale e minacciando la sicurezza europea, unita a crescenti attacchi ibridi e informatici contro gli Stati membri e le loro economie e società. La pace in Europa dipende dal fatto che l’Ucraina ottenga una pace globale, giusta e duratura. Questo contesto geopolitico, che è anche segnato dalla situazione in Medio Oriente, rimarrà impegnativo nel prossimo futuro”,
Costa ha invitato anche Rutte della Nato e il premier britannico Starmer, a testimonianza dell'importanza che attribuisce alla presenza di tutti gli attori in campo nel settore.
