The positions of those responsible for economic dossiers in the new Von der Leyen Commission will be assigned from September 2024. With the green light from the Parliament and the Council of the EU, from 1 December 2024 these important figures will be in office, some in the dual role of Executive Vice-President and Commissioner.
We outline a biographical and operational profile, citing the core competence (for example: economy, trade, etc.) that they will exercise.
Economy
Valdis Dombrovskis (Latvia, EPP)
Commissioner for Economy and Productivity, Implementation and Simplification.
The former Latvian Prime Minister and Finance Minister, 53 years old, will hold the third mandate as Commissioner, so far focused on financial services and the EU economy. During his years in Brussels, he also dealt with the trade dossier, trying to ease transatlantic trade tensions during the first US presidency of Donald Trump. Dombrovskis will retain the economics dossier and will be in charge of trying to reduce or simplify the myriad of EU regulations and directives.
Industry
Stéphane Séjourné (France, Renew Europe)
Executive vice-president for industrial policy.
The young Séjourné, 39, can already boast a veteran's CV. As French foreign minister, he was added to the team after Thierry Breton resigned from the outgoing Commission. Séjourné is a staunch supporter of President Emmanuel Macron, and was his adviser from 2014 to 2016 when Macron was economy minister. He chairs Macron's Renaissance party, and was also a member of the European Parliament, leading the centrist Renew Europe group.
Competition
Teresa Ribeira (Spain, S&D)
Executive Vice President Green Transition and Competition.
55 years old, Ribera will have the task of ensuring equal economic conditions in the European single market. Like outgoing antitrust chief Vestager, he will have to rein in Big Tech. A long-time supporter of ambitious climate action, Teresa Ribera has been Spain's minister for ecological transition since 2018.
Trade
Maros Sefcovic (Slovakia, S&D)
Commissioner for trade and economic security, interinstitutional relations.
58-year-old Sefcovic has been a commissioner since 2009, most recently responsible for relations with other EU institutions. Trade relations are a crucial point for the future of the EU and it is no coincidence that they were entrusted to this skilled Slovak negotiator, being a former diplomat, ambassador of Slovakia to Israel and the European Union. He dealt with the EU-UK and EU-Switzerland dossiers, contributing to improving bilateral relations with London and to signing the Windsor Framework Agreement, as well as managing to convince Bern to accept a broader agreement regulating its economic ties with the European Union.
Financial services
Maria Luís Albuquerque (Portugal, EPP)
Commissioner for financial services and investment union.
Albuquerque, 57, a PPE member, who served as Portuguese Finance Minister from 2013 to 2015, will manage the influential financial services portfolio and will have to unlock private investment as part of plans to create a savings and investment union. She knows her stuff, having worked for Arrow Global, a European fund manager, and for Morgan Stanley Europe, both as a non-executive director: professional roles that raised concerns about possible conflicts of interest, but which did not block her appointment.
Employment
Roxana Mînzatu (Romania, S&D)
Executive Vice-President for Skills (Improving Competitiveness and Productivity), Education.
She inherits a competence, that of, to put it simply, work, traditionally assigned to a socialist in the Commission. Elected to the European Parliament this year, 44 years old, after having worked as a manager in the management of European Union projects, she was elected to the Romanian Chamber of Deputies in 2016. A super expert in European Funds, Minzatu was Minister in Bucharest in 2019 and of European Funds and, since 2022, she has directed the Department and held the position of coordinator of the Department for the integrated evaluation and monitoring of programs financed with public and European funds of the General Secretariat of the Romanian Government.
Agriculture
Christophe Hansen (Luxembourg, EPP)
Commissioner for Agriculture and Food.
Forty-two years old, MEP since 2018, Hansen will manage the very delicate portfolio in charge of overseeing a sector that has strongly contested the policy of the first von der Leyen cabinet. He was also tasked with realising Ursula von der Leyen’s promise of a “vision” for the future of EU agriculture within 100 days of taking office. He expertly handled the role of rapporteur for the European Parliament’s recommendations of 18 June 2020 on the negotiations for a new partnership with the United Kingdom after Brexit.

L’ex primo ministro e ministro delle Finanze lettone, 53 anni, ricoprirà il terzo mandato da commissario, finora incentrato sui servizi finanziari e sull’economia Ue. Negli anni a Bruxelles, si è occupato anche del dossier commerciale, cercando di allentare le tensioni commerciali transatlantiche durante la prima presidenza statunitense di Donald Trump. Dombrovskis manterrà il dossier economia e sarà incaricato di cercare di ridurre o semplificare la miriade di regolamenti e direttive Ue.
Industria
Stéphane Séjourné (Francia, Renew Europe)
Vicepresidente esecutivo politica industriale.
Il giovane Séjourné, 39 anni, può già vantare un curriculum da veterano. Da ministro degli Esteri francese è stato aggiunto alla squadra dopo che Thierry Breton si è dimesso dalla Commissione uscente. Séjourné è un fedelissimo del presidente Emmanuel Macron, e suo consigliere dal 2014 al 2016 quando Macron era ministro dell’Economia. Presiede il partito di Macron, Renaissance, ed è stato anche membro del Parlamento europeo, alla guida del gruppo centrista Renew Europe.

55 anni, Ribera avrà il compito di garantire parità di condizioni economiche nel mercato unico europeo. Come il capo dell’antitrust uscente Vestager, dovrà tenere a freno le Big Tech.
Da sempre sostenitrice di un’azione ambiziosa per il clima, Teresa Ribera è stato ministro spagnolo per la transizione ecologica dal 2018.
Commercio
Maros Sefcovic (Slovacchia, S&D)
Commissario commercio e sicurezza economica, relazioni interistituzionali.
il 58enne Sefcovic è commissario dal 2009, da ultimo responsabile delle relazioni con le altre istituzioni Ue. Le relazioni commerciali sono uno snodo decisivo per il futuro dell'Ue e non è casuale se sono state affidate a questo abile negoziatore slovacco, essendo un ex diplomatico, ambasciatore della Slovacchia in Israele e nell’Unione europea Si è occupato del dossier Ue-Regno Unito e Ue-Svizzera, contribuendo a migliorare i rapporti bilaterali con Londra e a siglare l’accordo quadro di Windsor, così come è riuscito a convincere Berna ad accettare un accordo più ampio che regoli i suoi legami economici con l’Unione europea.
Servizi finanziari
Maria Luís Albuquerque (Portogallo, Ppe)
Commissario servizi finanziari e unione degli investimenti.
Albuquerque, 57 anni, in quota PPE, alle Finanze portoghesi dal 2013 al 2015, gestirà l’influente portafoglio dei servizi finanziari e dovrà sbloccare gli investimenti privati nell’ambito dei piani per la creazione di un’unione dei risparmi e degli investimenti. Se ne intende avendo lavorato per Arrow Global, gestore di fondi europei, e per Morgan Stanley Europe, in entrambi i casi come direttrice non esecutiva: ruoli professionali che hanno suscitato dubbi su possibili conflitti di interesse, ma che non hanno comunque bloccato la sua investitura.
Lavoro
Roxana Mînzatu (Romania, S&D)
Vicepresidente esecutiva per le competenze (miglioramento della competitività e della produttività), istruzione.
Eredita una competenza, quella, semplificando, del lavoro, tradizionalmente assegnata ad un socialista in Commissione. Eletta quest’anno al Parlamento europeo, 44 anni, dopo aver lavorato come manager alla gestione di progetti dell’Unione europea, è stata eletta alla Camera dei deputati rumena nel 2016. Super esperta in Fondi europei, la Minzatu è stata ministra a Bucarest nel 2019 è dei Fondi europei e, dal 2022, ha diretto il Dipartimento ha ricoperto l’incarico di coordinatrice del Dipartimento per la valutazione integrata e il monitoraggio dei programmi finanziati con fondi pubblici ed europei della Segreteria generale del governo rumeno.
Agricoltura
Christophe Hansen (Lussemburgo, Ppe)
Commissario agricoltura e alimentazione.
Quarantadue anni, europarlamentare dal 2018, Hansen gestirà il delicatissimo portafoglio incaricato di sovrintendere a un settore che ha duramente contestato la politica del primo gabinetto von der Leyen. A lui anche il compito di concretizzare la promessa di Ursula von der Leyen di una “visione” per il futuro dell’agricoltura dell’Ue entro 100 giorni dal suo insediamento. Ha con competenza occupato nei negoziati per un nuovo partenariato con il Regno Unito dopo la Brexit il ruolo di rapporteur delle raccomandazioni del Parlamento europeo del 18 giugno 2020.
