Zelensky and European leaders at Trump's White House

EU/ENG - Meetings between US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, and European leaders took place at the White House on Monday, August 18. The summit is a continuation of the negotiations begun with Putin in Alaska in recent days.

Trump first met with Zelensky, to whom he expressed "optimism" about peace between Russia and Ukraine. Shortly thereafter, an extended meeting took place with the other leaders waiting in the Oval Office: European Commission President von der Leyen and European leaders Merz, Macron, Starmer, Meloni, and Stubb. For NATO, Mark Rutte was present. There were few differences among the Europeans, who demonstrated their unity at the negotiating table. The meeting, which lasted until 7:00 a.m., was preceded by a video presentation of all those present and their positions. Referring to transatlantic partners, Trump said that "Europe is capable of protecting" Kiev. European leaders, particularly German Chancellor Merz, reiterated the need for a ceasefire.

Very cautious about his February on-air spat with Trump, Zelensky went so far as to declare that he was "ready for a trilateral meeting with Putin."

The Ukrainian leader, however, did not refrain from condemning Russia's attacks on Ukraine last night, which resulted in at least seven deaths in Kharkiv.

Donald Trump spoke of a trilateral summit with Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin: "In a week or two, we'll find out whether we're going to resolve this situation or whether this horrible war will continue," he said. Meanwhile, he canceled his August vacation to focus, according to his staff, on talks between the two warring countries.
